Iraqi Universities Achieve Global Recognition in QS and Times Higher Education Impact Rankings

Iraqi universities have made significant strides in global academic reputation and sustainable development indicators (SDGs).

Ten Iraqi universities earned notable placements in the QS World University Rankings 2026, which included over 1,500 universities worldwide. The University of Baghdad ranked 741–750, Al-Nahrain University 951–1000, while Al-Mustansiriyah University and the University of Anbar placed 1001–1200. Additionally, Tishk International University, and the universities of Babylon, Basrah, Karbala, Kufa, and Mosul were ranked within the 1201–1400 band.

This ranking is based on a methodology that evaluates:

  • Academic reputation (30%)

  • Employer reputation (15%)

  • Faculty-to-student ratio (10%)

  • Research citations (20%)

  • International faculty ratio (5%)

  • International student ratio (5%)

  • International research network (5%)

  • Employment outcomes (5%)

  • Sustainability indicator (5%)

In parallel, the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings 2025 showcased Iraq's prominent presence, with 88 Iraqi universities participating. This ranking measures universities’ contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across metrics related to research, institutional governance, community engagement, and education.

A landmark achievement was recorded as Al-Mustaqbal University secured 1st place globally in SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, positioning it among the Top Universities by SDG performance.
