Under the auspices of the Deanship of the College of Engineering and the supervision of the Head of the Department, Prof. Haitham Abdul-Hussein, and the course instructor, Prof. Dr. Suzan Abdul-Hassan, graduate students made a scientific visit to the Renewable Energy and Environment Research Center, affiliated with the Industrial Research and Development Authority/Ministry of Industry.

This valuable trip aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the study of environmental building systems and provide students with valuable insights into sustainable technologies and practical research initiatives. Students were introduced to current renewable energy systems (solar cells), cooling and heating systems, laboratory and environmental space designs, and passive cooling techniques in buildings.

The Renewable Energy and Environment Research Center was established in 1981 as a general directorate within the Scientific Research Council. It was designed by the Japanese company Mitsubishi and the American company Carrier. It is the first building of its kind in the Middle East and the only one to rely on smart systems in its operation in Iraq during that period. It remains a pioneering model in the field of smart buildings. The building was constructed in 1984 on an area of 3,000 square meters.
