Assistant Professor Dr. Farhan Ahmed Khammas from the Department of

Drone Engineering / College of Engineering / Al-Nahrain University published scientific research under the title:

An Experimental Study to Improve the Performance of Three-Straight Bladed Darrieus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

The research was published in a magazine journal of Advanced Research in Fluid      Mechanics and Thermal Sciences (Q3)

This study aims to improve the efficiency of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) by installing Savonius hollow turbines with Darius type wind turbines with vertical axis and straight blades. The study aims also to use the Darius wind turbine in low wind speeds for more effective energy generation. VAWTs are simple to manufacture and low in cost. To address the DarrieusWT problem, a combined rotor was used to increase the efficiency of the 3-Straight Bladed (3-SB) Darrieus WT. Two models of the WT were designed and manufactured, with the combined DS wind rotor providing a higher power coefficient than a simple Darrieus rotor. The study highlights the potential of VAWTs in low wind speeds.
