Under the auspices of the esteemed Dean of the College of
Engineering and the Head of the Department of Architecture, and as a final
activity of the collaborative project between Al-Nahrain University –
Department of Architecture and the University of Cagliari – College of
Environmental, Civil, and Architectural Engineering ("Babylon Legacy:
Capacity Building in the Preservation of Traditional Building Craft
Knowledge"), led by Visiting Professor for the period 11-13 February 2025 Professor
Maddalena Achenza from the University of Cagliari, a lecture was delivered by Miguel
Fernándes Méndes, an architectural consultant, expert in earthen architecture,
and a teaching member at the CRAterre International Center for Earthen
Architecture. The lecture explained Principles and Characteristics of Mud
Construction, and explored the sustainable features of earthen architecture and
its relationship to social, environmental, and economic aspects. It also
covered the principles of project management for construction projects using earth
as a primary building material. The event was attended by Professor Dr. Haitham Abdul Hussein
Al-Shammari, Head of the Department of Architecture, along with several faculty
members and students. The discussion was moderated by Assistant Professor Adel
Zamil Manshad, a faculty member in the Department of Architecture.
Méndes's visit is part of the Italian delegation from the
University of Cagliari, who visited Al-Nahrain University for the handover
ceremony of the signed Memorandum of Understanding between the two
universities.
